Last week I went on a short road trip to see reunited 80s bands Berlin, OMD, and the B52s with my Lofi Sofias bandmates Jessica and Gina. It was great to experience the ritual of much-loved music from my teen years with these amazing women.
I admit, I’m afraid I talked way too much – get me in a car and there is something about wheels rolling that opens me up to confess all sorts of things. I had a vulnerability hangover the next day. I hope they still like me!!
One of the things we talked about was sexuality – of course! I confessed that my first recognizable and memorable sexual stirrings as a kid were while watching 1960s vampire movies (heaving chests with breasts pouring out of corsets and uncontrolled desire got me – no wonder I was a goth in high school) and sneaking listens to David Bowie albums from my friend Michelle’s mother’s record collection.
Music has always made me feel bigger than myself. Sound is like a sea that I dive into and release my idea of self, where I can become anyone or anything – man or woman, tree, whale, bird, the moon. My sea of music of warm, safe, and expansive.

How were Berlin, OMD, and the B52s? I rarely get out to concerts anymore. I did see Dumsptafunk a few months ago. They were fantastic and inspired a couple of collaborations and recordings with frogs and one of my cats. 1960’s vampire movies got you going? There is a lot of sensuality in vampire lore I can understand the appeal. Goth years? I’ve worn all black all then time for 25+ years now, but I’m not a Goth.

We missed Berlin – they actually started on tim e(7 pm) – and we were eating dinner. But we caught OMD just as they were going on. They were freakin fantastic! They obviously were having so much fun, and their playing and singing were phenomenal! B-52s looked like they don’t even like each other – 😦 I learned a lot.
Frogs and cats? Yes! Sounds like fun.
I still wear a lot of black, though I am not so goth anymore! 😉

Started on time. Imagine that! I think the major groups on tour start more or less on time unless some unfortunate event makes them late. However, I friend who lives in Las Vegas complains about groups that show up when they are supposed to start playing, take an hour to set up, play 20 minutes and then take a break. Meanwhile a DJ has everyone on the floor dancing. He says “No wonder live music is taking a big hit.” He’s in the middle of it. As I said, I hardly ever get out to live performances anymore. I love live music, but there just seems to be too many things competing for time.
I really like OMD, I’m happy to hear they were fantastic.
Froggyphunk and DumsptaSpunk came up with some fun tunes. DumpstaSpunk’s “Meowing at the Half Moon” was picked up by a show that airs on NPR. That was cool.
