In the beginning . . . words from the Ground Up

I have been studying the chakras for, oh man, 30 years or so now. This winter I’m doing behind-the-scenes work for a large-scale chakra project I am hoping to release in the Spring of 2021. Right now my focus is on the first chakra.

Chakra 1: Muladhara ~ Root • Survival • Tribal Power • The Right to Have, To Be • Earth

The 1st chakra is our energetic body foundation. Without a strong sense of grounding, we have a difficult time in the physical world. This is where our most basic needs get met, and development of this chakra begins at birth (some say before birth, when we choose to manifest on the earth plane), with the most rapid development happening in the first few years of our lives. If we felt safe and nurtured growing up, we have a good chance of having a balanced first chakra. If we had dysfunctional families, we might need to do a little work (or allow ourselves a little play) to feel safe, grounded and balanced.

The first chakra is also about our connection to our “tribe”. The first tribe being our families, then perhaps school, friends, work, country.  The tribe helps us to build our foundation.  The tribe should eventually help us to create relationships with others and to build a strong sense of self.

First Chakra Quotes

The following quotes are from an ever-growing collection you may also find under Projects: Chakra Quotes. After doing so much research, when I read, my brain automatically says, “Oh, this is connected to such-and-such a chakra,” and, so, I started collecting and categorizing them.

Yes, let us hold life sacred, more sacred than ever. Death teaches us that. Let us hold each person, young or old, sick or well, as the sacred, precious, beloved being that they are. And in the circle of our hearts, let us make room for other sacred values too. To hold life sacred is not just to live long, it is to live well and right and fully. – Charles Eisenstein

I was lost, and the cost

Was to be outside society” – Patti Smith

“I don’t know what belonging means… I can only use my brain and intellectualize. I really wouldn’t able to tell you from the heart what belonging means… My memories of that place are my link to the place — memories of your experience in a place is your link… All people belong to the world. There is no exclusivity in that… The soil from America can differ from the soil in Malaysia, but its soil, it’s still the same. And the color of people’s skin can differ from place to place but it’s still skin. And, in that regard, there is no difference. “We travel like other people, but we return to nowhere/We have a country of words.” ~ Mamoud Darwish
Institutionalized rejection of difference is an absolute necessity in a profit economy which needs outsiders as surplus people. As members of such an economy, we have all been programmed to respond to human difference between us with fear and loathing and to handle that difference in one of three ways: ignore it, and if that is not possible, copy it if we think it is dominant, or destroy it if we think it is subordinate. But we have no patterns for relating across our human differences as equals. As a result, those differences have been misnamed and misused in the service of separation. ~ Audre Lorde Sister Outsider (1984)

“You have a right to experiment with your life. You will make mistakes. And they are right too. No, I think there was too rigid a pattern. You came out of an education and are supposed to know your vocation. Your vocation is fixed, and maybe ten years later you find you are not a teacher anymore or you’re not a painter anymore. It may happen. It has happened. I mean Gauguin decided at a certain point he wasn’t a banker anymore; he was a painter. And so he walked away from banking. I think we have a right to change course. 1. I was gonna say something about dragging him out by his hair – but that would only result in removing the poor animal living on top of his head. (Oh dear – that was not very nice)

  1. Wow! I was ready to comment how wonderfully excellent this post is start to finish, eSPECIALLY the trauma is the gateway drug part and the Greta part about ‘imagine your house is on fire’… and then. Wow. I so resonate being included with my 4 of Pentacles video. I won’t spoiler it here. Thank you, Holly. I am now going to go back and read this again. This is full-on dense with tons of liberating breathing roo, Quite a feat to take this all in, and I intend to. So many wonderful perspectives, and such a wonderful alchemical creation you put together and made here. Nodding. Bowing… and running back around to the start to ride again! 🙂

    1. Wonderful, Jordan! Yes, I need to take it in, too. This is maybe nine or ten years of collecting quotes – this is just the first chakra. There are six others – and of course, we know there are thousands of others. But one has to start somewhere!

The four of pentacles is so first chakra! Thanks for doing such amazing work yourself.

      1. 🙂 And, re-reading, LOVED Zappa’s nod to personal responsibility, though THIS one just had me nodding with YESSES…:

“When other little girls wanted to be ballet dancers I kind of wanted to be a vampire.” ~ Angelina Jolie

P.s. I’ll contribute 2 more for you. They are both authors on this compendium:

~ To school ME on my ‘Don’t waste trouble.’ In no ay to diminish myself. Quite the contrary. To add a neighbor in my Historical Friend Community… “I made a diamond out of my misfortune.” From The Chariot when it speaks by Alejandro Jodorowski

~ “There came a time when the risk to remain tight in the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” ~ Anais Nin. She is one of my faves. I’ll have to drum up some Julia Morgan for you. She was an Architect contemporary of Frank Lloyd Wright. You may even know her work without knowing it. Casa Grande? William Hearst’s mansion with the tiled pool posted everywhere? Julia Morgan. William Randolph Hearst’s mansion as ALL Julia Morgan. Interesting we hear about FLW but not Julia Morgan. She spoke to that actually. “Mrs. Morgan. Why ever don’t you market yourself out there like Frank Lloyd Wright?” To which, “Oh my. You do notice don’t you that when he does that he’s washed up again, has convinced the bank to give him a loan for a new Cord (sports car) to keep up his appearances when he’s about to go broke. No No. I’ve always been too busy for that nonsense. He should pay more attention to keeping his docket full. That’s just me, though.” 🙂

          1. Yes yes and Yes! I do have to laugh, though. I was reading along and nodding in resonance and, uh huh. Uh huh yes, uh huh. Read right through one of my quotes thinking, “Oh hat’s good, too.” Stopped 3 lines later. WAIT! Backed up. Shook my heading laughing, “That’s me.” 🙂 Partly felt so comfortable, partly just wasn’t something I saw through the front windshield so to speak. I think I am going to downshift and get more to the F1 (Formula 1) turtle, go slow to go faster.

I love that you are gathering quotes that align with the Chakras. Makes for wonderful, extended questions and mantras to work with when meditating on and working with them

            1. Isn’t it great when you come across your own work and don’t recognize it? And go, yeah, that’s good – and then, whoa, wait? Did I do that? Did I let that through? Where did that come from????

And yes, the quotes bring about extended questions – and hopefully a springboard for art, writing, consciousness.

              1. It is great wen that happens. One, it’s older and from a previous cycle, though more importantly it’s simply even more natural now when they have gone their own perennial path, like discovering a flower all grown up somewhere in your garden, that came up somewhere differently than where you planted it.

                1. such a great description of our creative babies growing up!

I especially experience this with writing, and visual art I haven’t looked at in a while. Many times, especially visually, I have to put work aside and notlook at it for a long time (years) before I can appreciate it. I’ve learned not to throw things away before their time.

with music – it takes decades. A much slower process.

        1. Nin is wonderful – I have not read her diaries, at least all of them, but I read her fiction. I usually go on a run with whichever author gets me excited. Nin, Vonnegut, Eldrich, Ellison, Alexi, Conrad, Atwood – the kind of writers who write so well you are sad when the book is done. So many I need to reread, too. I probably reread something by Vonnegut every year, and I’m thinking now of Guy de Maupassant and Henry James. Just went on a Patti Smith bender.

I think the Nin’s bud does need to be in the first chakra as well, it’s a sort of birth/rebirth experience.

          1. Yes on all. I do the same, nourishing by devouring everything they’ve written. I’m currently about to start into Jung’s letters by Edward Edinger titled, “The New God-Image.” It’s the only part of all of his works I have not read.

I agree on Nin’s bud quote going in the 1st chakra, and as well it is a wonderful cusp-y quote moving in and out of each chakra, the birth-and-death at one and the same time birth-rebirth… very Phoenix as we perennially naturalize in opening to discover more.
