Exhibition Statement

I was working on a slow, long-term project when I was invited to do a group show at the Kingston Pop Museum. I said, “yes,” then wondered how I was going to pull it off.

On the same day I said “yes” to the show – I found massive pieces of cardboard while strolling down a street I don’t normally walk down.

Synchromicity! The universe said “yes” to my “yes”.

I set about to create a show’s worth of work in 12 days. Frisson was the only piece already part of a private collection, though it was a pivotal piece for the way in which I paint with oil on cardboard.

My bio for the show:

Holly Troy is an artist, writer, teacher and musician, whose work explores forms for “deep play.”

Troy’s recent work has synthesized elements of all her disparate creative practices into a distilled form she calls “rapid essence”, that builds out of her historic painting work. Her ongoing, rapidly executed series of paintings on cardboard combine formal visual elements of the abstract style Troy developed through and beyond her art degree at Hunter College, with materials and a tempo of working that owe as much to her career as a singer in post-punk bands, as to any visual influence. The work takes visual elements of Mid-century high modernism and “covers” them with the urgency of a tight garage band…

Troy’s painting has been the subject of solo shows in the USA and is held in private collections across the US, Europe and Australia. She is based between Brooklyn and upstate New York.
