“Your Brain on Writing . . . ” repost

Reposting this from Writing the Energetic Body: I found a post with a graphic about writing and it’s effects on the brain. One of my favorite bytes is what it says about writing and stress: Writing can have similar effects on the mind as meditation. Your breathing slows down and you get into a “zone” […]

I’m gonna try with a little help from my friends

Asking for help can open our hearts. Yes, it is true, it is very hard to make money from music (or writing for that matter) anymore, when it is so easy to copy. As a musician and a writer and a teacher, I have struggled with the issues of having my work “taken” without a […]

now that you’re all grown up, who is your tribe?

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Jim Rohn

When we are growing up, most of us do not have a choice about whom we are spending our time with until we start making friends in school. We are surrounded and influenced by our families and/or caretakers. (Some people would argue that we do choose our families before we are born, and maybe that will work for this post as well. I get by with a little help (and laughter) from my friends

I saw three friends who I haven’t seen face-to-face in fifteen years today! They are such sweet people. They flew in from Los Angeles and are going to Sedona for some healing work. I don’t believe in God, I believe in Stories – or, maybe it’s Vonnegut

“There are plenty of good reasons for fighting, but no good reason ever to hate without reservation, to imagine that God Almighty Himself hates with you, too.”
Though this quote comes from the World War II-centered Mother Night (published in 1961), its wisdom and ugly truth still ring. Vonnegut (who often said “The only difference between Bush and Hitler is that Hitler was elected”) was righteously skeptical about war, having famously survived the only one worth fighting in his lifetime. And it’s never been more true: Left or right, Christian or Muslim, those convinced they’re doing violence in service of a higher power and against an irretrievably inhuman enemy are the most dangerous creatures of all.

Meditation on Waking

Born on a Thursday #10

I love to sleep. I love coming out of sleep slowly, and I love to write the minute I wake up.

For years, I had the practice of writing my dreams in the morning as soon as I awoke. I fell out of the habit over the last few years. I decided to begin practicing again this week.

This week I feel more alive, relaxed, and present than I have in a long time.
