Born on a Thursday #24 ~ All Shook Up

What’s the best thing to do when you can barely think and the weather is crappy and you’re visiting your mom who is a smoker and you are not? Look through boxes of stuff to see what you can find. I’ve been looking for two things mainly — old vocal exercise tapes with my coach Don Lawrence and videos of my performances. I found neither of those things. I did find one box with artwork and journals that have moldered and mice have made nests of, LPs that Chewie the pet rabbit has been snacking on, and, (redemption!) photos that are in pristine condition of my band The Halfbreeds!

“Your Brain on Writing . . . ” repost

Reposting this from Writing the Energetic Body: I found a post with a graphic about writing and it’s effects on the brain. One of my favorite bytes is what it says about writing and stress: Writing can have similar effects on the mind as meditation. Your breathing slows down and you get into a “zone” […]

Water Moon

Born on a Thursday #12 Water Moon/Earth Sun Eclipse It’s all around now, blooming in the air, spores, hanging like fruit,  like gnats. Exhale— dandelion. Make a wish. Slow drip swallowed.   Clay and cellulose — news of plumes. A coughing of black blossoms.

Meditation on Waking

Born on a Thursday #10

I love to sleep. I love coming out of sleep slowly, and I love to write the minute I wake up.

For years, I had the practice of writing my dreams in the morning as soon as I awoke. I fell out of the habit over the last few years. I decided to begin practicing again this week.

This week I feel more alive, relaxed, and present than I have in a long time.

4th Chakra Say . . .

Chakra 4: Anahata ~ Love • Peace • The Pure Sound of Creation • The Right to Love • Air

The 4th chakra is the core of our entire energy system, the fulcrum between the material world and the spiritual world. Its element is air; its principle is balance. In order to live, we need to breathe. When we take the time to pay attention to our breath, we invite our bodies to relax and our spirits to gently be known.

The heart is where we discover our emotional nature in relation to ourselves alone. (It is here where we also realize that Self, really is the whole world. As I inhale and exhale, I exchange the air with everything that inhales and exhales—you, animals, plants, etc.) In the big picture, nature is always balancing itself Bringing it back down to ourselves (knowing that we are connected), we must at some point ask ourselves, “How do I achieve balance in my life?”

The heart takes the passion of the first three chakras and moves it to a place of compassion. It takes raw energy and refines it, softens it, gives it an anchor.

20 Notes on Lasting Happiness by Swami Sitaramananda (reblog)

1. When the mind is more focused, you are happier. When the mind is one-pointed, it doesn’t swing so much. If it doesn’t have many waves, then you are happy.

2. Objects appear to give you happiness because of the conditioning of your mind to like this and dislike that, but truly objects cannot bring you lasting happiness. All objects are external things, but happiness comes from within you; it is your true nature.

Touching the Tiger

Eckhart Tolle’s talk completely resonated with me. Always bringing myself to the present moment – it can be work sometimes. This morning the Tiger showed up, but I just allowed myself to be present with it, and it dissipated quickly. I find that when I practice reiki, I feel synched in to the person I […]
