In an act of “letting go” – I let someone else write my bio. With my latest art show, rather than doing everything myself, I let others give me a hand. This may be the first time in my adult life, I released the reigns a bit. Graham Parker, friend and artist/journalist/strategist, offered to write my bio (it’s what he does).
Here it is:
Holly Troy is an artist, writer, teacher and musician, whose work explores forms for “deep play.”
Troy’s recent work has synthesized elements of all her disparate creative practices into a distilled form she calls “rapid essence”, that builds out of her historic painting work. Her ongoing, rapidly executed series of paintings on cardboard combine formal visual elements of the abstract style Troy developed through and beyond her art degree at Hunter College, with materials and a tempo of working that owe as much to her career as a singer in post-punk bands, as to any visual influence. The work takes visual elements of Mid-century high modernism and “covers” them with the urgency of a tight garage band…
Troy’s painting has been the subject of solo shows in the USA and is held in private collections across the US, Europe and Australia. She is based between Brooklyn and upstate New York.
Nailed it!
Yesterday, I was at the museum just sitting with the art. There was no show to worry about, just time to sit. I wrote:
It occurs to me that this will likely be the last time I get to just be with all these paintings. I created them in a whirl and never got the chance to really just sit with them.
A few are sold, so for sure I will never be in the same room with them all after this show closes next week.
Something changed for me and how I experience art making during the sprint I did for this show at the @kingstonpopmuseum –
I think as a human being I am changed.
I am grateful to have this chance to just sit in cool quiet.
Summertime!
Enjoy it while you can.
Big love,
Holly
