LGBTQ
Acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. The Q generally stands for queer when LGBTQ organizations, leaders, and media use the acronym. In settings offering support for youth, it can also stand for questioning. LGBT and LGBTQ+ are also used, with the + added in recognition of all non-straight, non-cisgender identities. (See Transgender Glossary ) Both are acceptable, as are other versions of this acronym. The term “gay community” should be avoided, as it does not accurately reflect the diversity of the community. Rather, LGBTQ community or LGBTQ+ community are recommended.

There’s no one ‘right’ way of saying things. Identities are deeply personal, and many people will define theirs using language that looks different to ours. Language is also evolving constantly, and LGBTQ+ terms are no exception to this.

UPDATE

Trump’s word ban has directly affected thousands of people, and the ripple effect will be felt worldwide and for years to come.

DOGE terminated grants based on words on the list.

This is a short video taken from the “Nathan Cavanaugh Deposition in ACLS-AHA-MLA Lawsuit About the NEH” by the American Council of Learned Societies, American Historical Association, and Modern Language Association. The full deposition is presented in six parts.

“As part of a lawsuit brought by the American Council of Learned Societies, American Historical Association, and Modern Language Association, Nathan Cavanaugh was deposed on January 23, 2026 about his role (as a political appointee at the General Services Administration and DOGE team member) in the termination of NEH grants.”

Here is a description of all the depositions and the complete playlist of the depositions from youtube @ModernLanguageAssoc

As part of a lawsuit brought by the Modern Language Association, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the American Historical Association, two key members of the DOGE team, Justin Fox and Nate Cavanaugh, as well as Adam Wolfson (NEH Assistant Chair for Programs) and Michael McDonald (NEH General Counsel and Acting Chair of the NEH from March 2025 to January 2026) were deposed about their roles in the termination of NEH grants.

video from Another DOGE bro explains how he flagged “DEI” grants for termination. (n.d.). YouTube.

See other words besides LGBTQ mentioned in the deposition:

I imagine these words are also flagged but not currently on my list:

  • HIV / AIDS
  • abolition
  • prison abolition
  • feminist – feminism is on the list, “feminist” is not
