uterus

The uterus (from Latin uteruspl.uteri or uteruses) or womb (/wm/) is the organ in the reproductive system of most female mammals, including humans, that accommodates the embryonic and fetal development of one or more fertilized eggs until birth.[1] The uterus is a hormone-responsive sex organ that contains glands in its lining that secrete uterine milk for embryonic nourishment. (The term uterus is also applied to analogous structures in some non-mammalian animals.)

During his second term, which began in January 2025, Donald Trump’s administration has taken actions impacting people with uteruses by targeting abortion access, contraception, reproductive health care research, and transgender health.

Abortion access
  • Reinstatement of anti-abortion policies: On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order to end federal taxpayer funding for abortion. He also reinstated the “Global Gag Rule,” which cuts funding to international organizations that provide or discuss abortion.
  • Enforcement of abortion restrictions: His administration curtailed prosecutions under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, which protects abortion clinics, and dismissed a lawsuit affirming a federal law requiring emergency abortion care in Idaho.
  • Veteran Affairs (VA) abortion ban: In August 2025, a new rule was introduced to ban VA hospitals from providing abortions for veterans, even in cases of rape or incest.
  • Enforcement of the Comstock Act: Some policy experts and conservative groups, including those behind the Project 2025 initiative, advocate for a strict interpretation and enforcement of the Comstock Act. This 19th-century law could be used to ban the mailing of all abortion medications and supplies nationwide, even in states where abortion is legal.
  • Differing public and private stances: While Trump has publicly stated that abortion policy should be left to the states, he has also been inconsistent and made comments that contradict this position.
Contraception and birth control
  • Restricted access: The administration implemented policies allowing employers and institutions to deny birth control coverage for religious or moral reasons, effectively rolling back the Affordable Care Act (ACA) mandate for contraception coverage.
  • Defunding of family planning: A 2025 budget law prohibited federal payments to certain family planning providers, including Planned Parenthood, that also offer abortion services.
Health research and data collection
  • Cuts to federal research: Trump’s administration has reportedly shut down research studies related to women’s reproductive health, including uterine fibroids and pregnancy risks, by instructing federal agencies not to approve grants with words like “women,” “trans,” or “diversity”.
  • Defunding of IVF research: Funding for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) in vitro fertilization (IVF) research team was eliminated, despite Trump’s public support for IVF.
  • Dismantling of federal task forces: The administration has halted federal task forces and efforts aimed at protecting reproductive health privacy and data collection.
Broader impacts on health and rights
  • LGBTQ+ health restrictions: An executive order in January 2025, titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” eliminated federal guidance protecting LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Risks to sexual and reproductive health: International reproductive health organizations have warned that Trump’s policies could lead to millions of unintended pregnancies and thousands of preventable maternal deaths globally.
Past actions during the first term
  • Appointment of conservative judges: Trump’s appointment of conservative judges to the Supreme Court paved the way for the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, which ended federal protections for abortion rights.
  • Allegations of forced sterilization: During his first term, a whistleblower alleged that immigrants at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center had received hysterectomies without their full consent.
